A Day of Giving: Vacaville Barber and Cosmetology School Brings Community Together with Free Haircuts
VACAVILLE, Calif. — On a sunny Thursday, hope and fresh looks filled the Nut Tree Plaza. The Milan Institute of Cosmetology in Vacaville invited the community for free haircuts, trims, and even tinsel applications. More than 100 people sat in chairs as student barbers and stylists went to work, their instructors watching closely.
Christopher Day, a barbering student, sparked the idea for the event. He saw an open space in the Nut Tree Plaza and asked Toniika Wakefield, the campus director, if Milan’s students could help Vacaville residents. Toniika said yes. Together, they opened their doors and hearts to the city.
“I am thankful for the chance to provide services to my community,” Christopher said. “It means the world to show what happens when you give. I used to feel unheard, but now my words and my work are seen and valued. I plan to keep coming back. As long as hair grows, we’ll be here to cut.”

On Thursday, the barber and cosmetology students performed over 115 haircuts, trims, and tinsel applications. The esthetician students also stepped up, offering complimentary waxing services. Laughter and music filled the air as instructors like Mr. Ritchie, Ms. Nichelle, Ms. AJ, Ms. Amaria, and Ms. Nargiza coached from the sidelines.
“It was a powerful reminder of what happens when passion meets purpose,” Toniika said after the event. “Our students supported each other and their city. They served with heart. I am beyond proud.”
For student Kristian Rinaldi, the day showed the impact of a simple act. “This event highlighted the importance of helping one another,” he said. “If we can make someone’s day by cutting hair and playing music, why wouldn’t we do it every chance we get?”
The Vacaville barber and cosmetology school’s community efforts will not end with one event. They have received an invitation to work alongside the Fairfield Police Activities League Teen Center. Details will be announced soon.
As summer rolls on, Milan Institute’s students will also join the 2nd annual backpack giveaway at the Muzetta Thrower Adult Education Center on August 9. An extra 100 haircuts will be donated. Recipients can schedule appointments at the school from August 10 to 15 to receive professional salon care, free of charge.
Through months of training and hours of volunteering, these Vacaville barber and cosmetology school students have found a calling: serving their community with skill, kindness, and pride.
