For Irma Aguilar, returning to school was about more than learning a new skill—it was about creating independence, building a legacy, and designing a future on her own terms. When she enrolled in the Manicurist program at Milan Institute in Clovis, Irma had a clear vision: she wanted a career that would allow her to create her own business.

Irma’s journey through the program was not without challenges. While attending school, she discovered she had developed an allergy to traditional acrylic nail products, which made performing standard nail services difficult. For many, this could have felt like a roadblock—but Irma refused to let it stop her. Instead, she leaned into research, education, and innovation. Through persistence and self-motivation, she learned about alternative products and ultimately built her business using HEMA-free nail systems, allowing her to continue pursuing her career safely and successfully.

This ability to adapt and problem-solve became one of Irma’s greatest strengths. Her time at Milan reinforced the importance of continuous learning and staying informed in an industry that is always evolving. Even when circumstances required her to take a different approach, she remained focused on her long-term goals and committed to finding solutions that aligned with her vision.

Today, Irma is proudly self-employed, running her own nail business and doing what she loves. Her career reflects not only technical skill, but resilience, creativity, and a deep commitment to growth. Building her own business has given her the freedom she envisioned when she first decided to return to school—and the confidence that she can overcome obstacles through knowledge and determination.

Her advice to future students speaks directly from experience: “Study, retain what you learn, and keep learning—this career is constantly changing.”
