SAN ANTONIO — On a warm June afternoon at The Shops at Bandera Road, the hum of clippers and the energy of a new beginning filled the air as Crafted Illusion, a barbershop founded by Milan Institute students Derrick Ayala and Leo Lopez, opened its doors to the public.

What set the occasion apart was not only the launch of a new local business, but the fact that its founders have yet to graduate.

Ayala and Lopez, both currently enrolled at Milan Institute, have transformed their training into tangible success, demonstrating a level of discipline and entrepreneurial drive that speaks to a broader shift in career education—where ambition no longer waits for a diploma.

“I had the honor of attending the grand opening of Crafted Illusion, and it was truly inspiring to witness,” said Jennifer Alcoser, Campus Director at Milan Institute. “Derrick and Leo are still students, yet they are already building something meaningful for their community.”

Throughout the opening day, the shop buzzed with activity as Ayala, Lopez, and fellow Milan students delivered more than 20 haircuts to local residents. The event doubled as both a business launch and a community service effort, reflecting the collaborative culture fostered within the institute.

The day also carried a deeper emotional significance. In a moment of reflection, the team honored the memory of DeAndre Shuler, a beloved Milan barber instructor who passed away in July 2025. His influence, students said, continues to guide their work and aspirations.

“What makes this accomplishment even more remarkable is their commitment while still in training,” Alcoser said. “Their dedication, talent, and work ethic have already positioned them for success, and their future in this industry is incredibly bright.”

Located at 1331 Bandera Road, Suite 172, Crafted Illusion represents more than a business venture—it is a testament to what can be achieved through early opportunity, mentorship, and perseverance. For Milan Institute, it stands as a living example of its mission to empower students with practical skills and real-world confidence.

“I am incredibly proud of these young men,” Alcoser added. “They are proof that success does not have to wait until graduation. Their passion and determination are already making an impact, and they will continue to make Milan proud for years to come.”

As customers filled the chairs and the final cuts of the day were completed, the opening of Crafted Illusion marked not just the start of a business, but the emergence of two young professionals already shaping their future—one haircut at a time.
