Thinking about a career where you can help people relax, relieve pain, and promote healing? Becoming a massage therapist might just be your perfect fit! At Milan Institute, we make it easy and exciting to start your journey toward this rewarding profession. Here’s your fun and friendly guide to becoming a licensed massage therapist!

Dive Into Your Massage Therapy Education

Your first step is enrolling in Milan Institute’s Massage Therapy program, where you’ll get hands-on training and expert instruction in as little as 34 weeks! Our program covers everything you need to know, including:

  • Anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology will help you understand how the body works
  • Massage theory and application, where you learn the art and science of touch
  • Pathology and ethics to keep your practice safe and professional
  • Massage techniques from Swedish and deep tissue to prenatal and sports massage
  • Spa therapies such as aromatherapy, hot stones, and mud wraps

In addition to classroom studies, you’ll practice your skills in Milan Institute student spas. Between the student spa and your externship, we believe you will gain confidence and positive experiences before you graduate. With over 600 hours of quality instruction, you’ll be ready to take the next step toward licensure!

Pass the State Licensing Exam

Each state has its own set of licensing requirements. For example, after completing your education in Sparks, Nevada, you’ll need to pass a national exam recognized by the Nevada State Board of Massage Therapy. The most common is the MBLEx (Massage & Bodywork Licensing Examination), which tests your knowledge and readiness to practice safely and effectively. Our committed career services team and instructors will help guide you through the process. Our ultimate goal at Milan Institute is to help our graduates become career-ready, including passing any state licensing board tests.

To get licensed in Nevada, you’ll need to:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Complete a background check with fingerprinting
  • Finish a CPR certification course
  • Prepare a passport-quality photo, a copy of your state ID, and your Social Security card

These steps ensure you’re ready to provide safe, professional care to your future clients.

Once you’ve passed your exam and gathered all your documents, it’s time to submit your application to the Nevada State Board of Massage Therapy. Your transcripts and certificate from Milan Institute will be sent directly to the Board, and you’ll pay the application and licensing fees. Then, just sit tight while your application is processed. This usually takes one to three months.

Welcome to Your New Career!

Once approved, you’re officially a licensed massage therapist in Nevada! You can start helping clients feel better, reduce stress, and improve their well-being. Remember, to keep your license current, you’ll complete 24 hours of continuing education every two years.
