What to Expect at Your First Financial Aid Appointment at Milan Institute

Starting your educational journey is an exciting time, and meeting with your financial aid adviser is a key step in making your goals a reality. At Milan Institute, the financial aid team is dedicated to helping you understand your options. We want to guide you through the process with confidence.

What Is the Purpose of the First Financial Aid Meeting?

Your initial meeting with a financial aid adviser is designed to:

  • Help you navigate the financial aid application process

  • Determine your eligibility for federal, state, and private aid programs

  • Answer questions about grants, loans, and scholarships

  • Estimate your cost of attendance and discuss payment options

Remember, you don’t have to figure everything out on your own. Your adviser is here to support you every step of the way. No matter your questions or concerns, the financial aid team is committed to making the process as smooth and stress-free as possible.

What Should You Bring to Your Appointment?

To make the most of your appointment and avoid delays, be sure to have the following ready:

  • FSA ID:
You’ll need your Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID to log in to the official financial aid website (studentaid.gov). If you haven’t created one yet, do so as soon as possible, since verification can take up to three business days.

  • FSA IDs for Others (If Required):
If you’re married, your spouse will need their own FSA ID. If you’re a dependent student (typically under 24 and unmarried), your parents may also need FSA IDs. Each person should use the exact name as it appears on their Social Security card.

  • Personal Identification:
Bring your Social Security card and any other identification required to verify your identity and match your FSA ID.

  • Relevant Financial Documents:
While not always needed at the first meeting, it’s helpful to have recent tax returns, W-2s, or other income information so your adviser can better estimate your aid eligibility.

Why Is the FSA ID So Important?

Your FSA ID is your electronic signature for federal student aid documents. It allows you to:

  • Start and complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

  • Sign loan agreements and complete entrance counseling if you’re eligible for federal loans

  • Access and update your financial aid information online

If your FSA ID isn’t verified before your appointment, you may need to schedule a follow-up meeting to complete your application. This could delay your financial aid processing, so it’s best to set up your FSA ID early.

What Will Your Adviser Help You With?

During your appointment, your adviser will guide you through the FAFSA process, explaining each step so you understand what is required. They will discuss the types of financial aid you may qualify for, including grants, loans, and scholarships, and help you determine which options best fit your needs.

Your adviser will also answer any questions you have about the financial aid process or your specific situation, ensuring you feel informed and supported. Additionally, they will help you understand your rights and responsibilities as a financial aid recipient, so you are aware of what is expected of you.

Tips for a Smooth Appointment

  • Complete any requested steps before your meeting, such as setting up your FSA ID

  • Write down any questions you have about financial aid, scholarships, or payment plans

  • Bring all required documents to avoid delays

  • Remember, your adviser is there to help—don’t hesitate to ask for clarification or additional information
